Chamber Music

First UU is blessed to have many professional musicians, along with talented amateurs, as regular members. Flutist Lea Pearson, one of the professionals, has organized them into a chamber music series call UUNIVERSE! Diverse Music You Want to Know with help from Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Their specialty is performing underrepresented composers and to date have given concerts of the highest quality by women, GLBT, African American, Hispanic, Arab, and Asian composers.

In addition, First UU has sponsored other chamber music concerts, including solo piano recitals by staff pianist Nathan Hamm, A Brass Recital of music for solo trumpet, trombone and horn, accompanied by strings and piano, and A Concert to Benefit Unity Temple Restoration Foundation that featured a variety for small ensembles performing.

Special events

A number of special musical events occur throughout the year. There is an annual sing-along where people come together simply to sing favorite songs. The lyrics are posted on a large screen and we are accompanied by live or recorded music. Some of the themes have been folk music, Broadway, songs from the hymnal and karaoke.

We also have occasional performances by touring and local musicians, as well as church groups. UU Minister Meg Barnhouse appeared in 2010, along with local troubadour Bill Cohen and his “1960’s Coffeehouse.” Local groups with a church affiliation have performed recently, among them P/J and the Hipsters, Bohemian Highway and Grassahol, and recently we had a Youth Talent Nite that featured 20 young members of our church singing and playing instruments, in both popular and classical styles, and giving dramatic readings.
