"Art with an Attitude," featuring 48 framed front pages from the Golden Age of the Underground Press, 1960s-1970s, is now on exhibit in the Gallery through February.
Don Rice presents this collection of front pages of the underground press assembled during his days as an editor/graphic artist - pages which represent the artistic expression of a turbulent political era, revealing through art the power, frustration, anger and humor of the 60s-70s.
If you're thinking things are polarized Now, take a close look at this exhibit of the 60s and join Don to talk about the way things were Then (and Now) at the opening reception and talkback for "Art with an Attitude" on Sunday, January 16, 1pm.
[SLIDESHOW COMING SOON]
Don Rice has been a graphic artist and writer for over 50 years --
except when he was a shell fisherman, hotel desk clerk, purchasing agent, footpress operator, and small business advisor with the Peace Corps.
He's worked in the advertising departments of seven newspapers and for 25 years ran his own typesetting company. His writing credits include industrial technical manuals, man hundereds of book blurbs, elementary history textbooks, and three produced plays, one of which won an Ohio Arts Council Playwright's Award. His short stories, articles, and satires have been published in many periodicals ranging from Creative Ohio to the New York Times to Scholia Satyrica. For five years he was editor and publisher of Schism: A Journal of Divergent American Opinions. Don has written or edited sevel published books and last year was given an Individual Achievement Award from the Ohio Arts Council for his biography of Andrew Rowan, a well-know soldier during the Spanish-American War.
As and early member of the Students for a Democratic Society, who also happened to be interested in graphic arts, he was naturally drawn to the underground press publications. And as a self-confessed hoarder, he accumulated and saved all the front pages on display, which represent a tiny fraction of the thousands of periodicals he once owned.
